Welcome
Firstly, may I welcome you to 281 Squadron’s web site, the official and primary site for information on the Air Training Corps, sometimes called the Air Cadets, in Southport.

Who am I? I am Flight Lieutenant Dave Wright, Officer Commanding 281 (Southport) Squadron. I have been with the Squadron for twelve years and the “Boss” for just over five.

When I was asked to write this introduction I thought, “How could I possibly convey everything that we do, as a Squadron, in just a paragraph or two?”

Dave Wright, Flight Lieutenant, RAFVR(T).

I very quickly realised however, that I could not. But then again I do not really need too, as this web site will show you all the events which we take part in, as well as all the things you need to know.

The motto of the Air Cadets is VENTURE – ADVENTURE, or to put it another way “to have a go at something you have never done before – and have fun whilst you are doing it”.

Some of the activities we offer are, Flying, Gliding, No 8 (.22) Target Shooting, L98 Rifle Marksmanship, Adventure Training, Duke of Edinburgh Award, Sports, Camps and so much more. All the activities however are offered to you, as a VENTURE “to volunteer for”, rather than a “you must do”.

Cadets Our Cadets vary in their expectations and therefore some love to fly whilst others have never been in a plane, but all enjoy some part of the activities we offer. What you do is up to you!!

We parade on Monday and Friday nights at the old St Peter’s School Building in Upper Aughton Road, Birkdale, opposite the Blundell Arms public house from 19:15 hours (7.15 p.m) to 21:30 hours (9.30 p.m).

You need to be 13 years old to join us at the Squadron so why not pay us a visit and see if the Air Cadets is, the organisation for you.

In the mean time happy surfing on this web site and if you think you would like to find out more why not call in and visit us. Spend a night or two at the Squadron and see what we are about and what we can offer you. The only way to find out whether you will enjoy it is to give it a go!! I look forward and hope to see you at our Squadron soon!!!

Dave Wright, Flight Lieutenant, RAFVR(T).

Officer Commanding, 281 (Southport) Squadron, Air Cadets.
